The Positioning Nobody Chose

Every business has a positioning.

Including yours. Including the ones that have never used the word, never hired a consultant, never spent an afternoon thinking about brand strategy.

Positioning isn't something you create. It's something you accumulate through every decision made, every customer served, every price charged, everything said and left unsaid.

All of it builds a picture in the market's mind. The picture exists whether you drew it deliberately or not.

Most businesses discover this too late.

They look up one day and find they've been positioned as the cheap option, the reliable but uninspiring choice, the producer nobody seeks out, but nobody avoids either. They didn't choose that position. But they built it, one unconsidered decision at a time.

In the Swartland in the early 2000s, a small group of winemakers made a different kind of decision. They didn't wait for the market to tell them who they were. They decided, clearly and collectively, before anyone outside the region was paying attention, that they would make wines of uncompromising quality from a place the world hadn't yet heard of, and they would share the risk of that decision.

Nobody called it a positioning strategy. There was no single moment where everything changed. There were hundreds of decisions, made consistently over years, all pointing in the same direction.

The market didn't confirm those decisions for a long time. They made them anyway.

That's the difference between a positioning that forms by accident and one that holds under pressure. One is built from convenience. The other is built from conviction.
